Lift Ticket FAQs

Where do I pick up my pass/ticket card?

Head to a ticket office or rental shop at any base lodge during operating hours. You may pick up your tickets immediately after purchase or choose to wait until closer to the valid dates. Additional ticket windows are available during select times at the base of Chair 2 (The Mill), Chair 4 (Rollercoaster Express), Mountain Center and Mammoth Sports in The Village. Guests of Mammoth Lodging Collection venues may be able to fulfill ticket purchases at the front desk of their lodge.

How do I use my pass/ticket card?

Season pass and ticket cards at Mammoth Mountain use RFID, which stands for radio-frequency identification. It is a small circuit integrated into your pass/ticket card. When you pass through the lift gates, this circuit will register and open the gates for you. There are many guest benefits that RFID allows Mammoth Mountain to provide, such as direct-to-lift convenience, reloadable tickets and easier access to the mountains and lifts.

Where should I carry my pass/ticket card?

You must put your RFID card in a separate pocket from things such as credit/debit cards, cell phones, digital music players, or any foil-wrapped items such as gum wrappers, cold medicine, etc.

Can I punch a hole in my pass/ticket card?

No, holes must never be punched in season passes or daily lift ticket cards. The card has an antenna embedded that surrounds the embedded RFID chip. Any damage to the surrounding antenna will render the card inactive and must be replaced for a replacement fee.

Can a magnet destroy my pass/ticket card?

No. The chip information in the card is not stored magnetically. Use of a magnet or other erasing devices has no effect whatsoever on the chip.

I'm buying a pass for a child, grandchild, or friend, how do I do this?

You will be able to purchase these products online. The parent/guardian (over 18) must build their profile first. The information for the pass holders is entered later in the process.

Do you allow uphill access at Mammoth Mountain?

We do. Please visit our Uphill Access page for more information.

View Questions & Answers

What information is stored on RFID pass/ticket cards?

Each RFID tag physically contains only the randomly generated number associated with each unique user profile. No personal or additional information is stored on individual RFID tags.

I've seen scanning at other resorts, is RFID better?

RFID and bar code scanning achieve the same goals though different means. Bar codes require line of sight so that that each ticket or pass can be read by a scanner. RFID tags are read via an embedded passive radio frequency chip and does not require a line of sight. This means you will not have to show your pass/card/ticket each time you load the lift.

Can RFID be used to access my personal information?

Each unique RFID tag contains a multiple digit number randomly associated with a user profile. This profile is kept as a secure component of our point of sale system and user database, and will not be accessible to other guests or employees.

Will my RFID pass/ticket card interfere with other RFID products?

No; because each RFID tag is associated with a specific randomly generated number that is associated with a specific, secure database, other RFID products will not register within the Mammoth Mountain lift access system. Other RFID products currently in use include the Expanded CA Drivers License, US passports issued since October 2006, and many current makes and models of alpine ski and snowboard equipment.

What about RFID and pacemakers?

Mammoth's Axess/Sirius lift access system is CE certified and complies with all standards. It was found that with the proper use of devices there is no danger for persons using pacemakers when passing hands free entry systems at the lift. However, for reasons of precaution and compliance with the general requirements applicable, the following recommendations for using electromagnetic units should be adhered to:

  • Guests with pacemakers must not wear their pass/lift cards near the heart when passing through the gate.

  • A distance of 8 to 12 inches should be observed in the case of queues and while passing through the gate. If vertigo or sickness is experienced, get out of the direct vicinity of the gate or device.

  • If you prefer not to pass through the gate, please alert our validation staff at the lift and you will be given alternative direction for lift access.

Are there any other concerns associated with RFID?

Mammoth Mountain is employing Passive RFID technology which does not radiate any RF energy, but simply reflects it. As a result, the passive RFID tags used at Mammoth Mountain do not contribute any additional RF energy into the surrounding environment.

Will RFID chips be ruined if they go through the washing machine/dryer?

No. RFID chips are designed in such a way as to survive normal wear and tear for years, washing and drying included. Some uniform lenders use RFID technology keep track of their inventory and assignments after cleaning. That means that the chips can even withstand industrial standards of use and cleaning.

How widely used is RFID technology?

RFID technology is used in wide variety of industries and applications. Your automobile almost certainly has an immobilizer to prevent it from being stolen. It has been ten years since the Ford Motor Company first introduced an RFID immobilizer and such systems are common in vehicles manufactured by the other major manufacturers. RFID has also been used extensively in toll collection, inventory control, building security, and library systems.

Will RFID technology interfere with my other wireless technology?

The radio frequencies used by RFID are assigned by regulatory agencies around the world to help ensure that no interference occurs.

Can RFID be read from satellites?

No. It would require a huge amount of power to be able to read the chip from that far of a range.
