DISCOVERY NATURE TRAIL (Base Area)

An easy add-on if you want a little more exploring after the gondola ride, without committing to a big hike.

What to expect:

About 1 mile loop trail
Interpretive stops highlighting local plants, wildlife, and alpine ecology
Light elevation and approachable terrain throughout

SUMMIT STATION ♿

This is the highest point at 11,053 ft and the main hub of the experience. Quick hits at the top:

Inside the Interpretive Center, exhibits bring Mammoth’s volcanic history, weather, wildlife, and geology to life with hands-on displays, touch screens, and real materials you can see and feel, including animal furs and local rock samples. You can stop in for a few minutes, or spend hours diving into the exhibits and learning more about the mountain from every angle.

Eleven53 Café is also open during the summer months, serving grilled cheese sandwiches, drinks, and summit views from 11,053 ft.

If you only do one thing at the summit, step out to the viewpoints and take in the scale of it all.

VIEWFINDER HIGHLIGHTS

LAKES BASIN OVERLOOK ♿

A short walk from the summit area, this overlook is one of the most striking viewpoints on the mountain. What you get here:

McCoy Station + Museum ♿

On the way back down, McCoy Station brings in a different side of Mammoth: the people and history that shaped it. This is also where you’ll find a few unexpected kid favorites, including the Woolly Mammoth statue and the heavy equipment displays parked outside.What you’ll find:

The indoor over 10 ft Woolly Mammoth statue
Exhibits on Dave McCoy and the early days of Mammoth Mountain, including a self-guided audio experience that shares his story throughout the McCoy Museum

WEATHER STATION: SNOW STUDY SITE ♿

This stop shows how Mammoth’s snow connects far beyond the mountain, playing a key role in California’s water supply and giving visitors a look at how it’s measured and studied.

What you’ll see:

Instruments used to measure snowfall and snowpack
Simple, visual explanations of how data is collected
A clearer look at how mountain snow impacts water systems across the state

Why it’s interesting: It turns something familiar like snow into a real-world system you can see and understand right on the mountain.

GEOLOGY STOP: LONG VALLEY OVERLOOK

Mammoth sits on top of one of the most active volcanic regions in the country, and this stop helps explain why.
