Best Spots to Stoke up the Sun

For generations, families have been coming to the area to enjoy the beauty of the Eastern Sierra. It all started with Dave McCoy, the visionary behind Mammoth Mountain, when he established a life of adventure with his family and friends, inspiring others to explore the area even beyond the snow-covered slopes. Weekend warriors and locals alike can agree that the scenic views and iconic pit stops along the way are what make the adventure even more fun and memorable.

For those who are just beginning to explore what the greater Mammoth area has to offer, check out these favorites for some inspiration.

Five favorite stops along the 395 (and other nearby gems)

1. Stretch your legs at the Big Beanie – A quirky mid-trip stop at the giant Mammoth Beanie is a favorite spot to stretch legs and attempt a fun photo op. Don’t forget to pre-order your new beanie when the first “Mystery Beanie” hints are dropped in the Fall.

2. Picnic at Convict Lake – The perfect location for an easy hike or a picnic lunch, Convict Lake is a go-to spot for visitors and locals. Tall peaks surround the serene lake, perfect for a mellow day on the shore or a casual paddleboard on the water.

3. Venture up to the top of the world – X marks the spot at the top of Mammoth Mountain. Catch the Scenic Gondola to a comfortable cruise to 11,053 feet elevation. You’re sure to feel the high-altitude exhilaration with a picture-perfect scenic view of the Minarets.

4. Go fishin’ at Silver Lake – Nestled along the June Lake Loop, Silver Lake is a favorite spot for new and seasoned anglers alike. The Lake is a masterpiece in itself with picturesque, postcard-worthy backdrops, a cozy restaurant and general store for all to enjoy.

5. Wander through Gold Rush history – Once a booming gold rush town, Bodie State Park has become a popular destination for day trippers. Peek into the past through the windows of an old saloon, a schoolhouse or a cabin to understand why this spot is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the country.

Where’s your spot?

Everyone has that favorite pit stop or adventure in or around Mammoth that calls them back year over year. Maybe it’s a scenic overlook along the 395, a beautiful red canyon in the middle of nowhere, a simple fishing hole your family loves to visit, or a backcountry trail deep in the woods. Whether simple or grand, what matters most is that the tradition is yours, and it’s an unforgettable photo-worthy moment to pass down for generations to come.
