Intro to Backcountry Touring

9AM & 1PM Daily  |  For Intermediate–Expert Skiers/Snowboarders

Learn the basics of backcountry touring from our PSIA-certified instructors and AMGA-certified guides. These 3-hour clinics are limited to 6 students and cover touring and safety equipment, skinning, kick turns, downhill transitions, skating, and downhill ski practice, all with instructor demos, evaluation and feedback. It's the safest and easiest way to give touring a try, right here on Mammoth Mountain.

A valid season pass or lift ticket is required.

Location

Classes meet on snow at between Main Lodge and the Panorama Gondola building.

Provided Equipment

Avalanche safety equipment (beacon, probe and shovel) will be provided in a backpack to each student.

Rental Equipment

Skis, boots, skins and poles are available to rent at the Main Lodge rental shop.

Required Equipment

The following items are NOT provided or covered by the class fee and must be secured separately PRIOR TO CLASS.  Rentals are available at Mammoth Mountaineering Supply in town (888.395.3951) with a 20% discount for clinic students.

Students must have the following items in hand at the beginning of the clinic:

  • Skis with AT bindings (or a Splitboard with transitional bindings)
  • AT boots (for skiers)
  • Adjustable touring poles
  • Skins (already fitted to skis or splitboard)

Recommended Equipment

  • Sunscreen & Lip Balm
  • 1-2L of Water
  • Snacks
  • Face Mask or Balaklava
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses & Goggles
  • Gloves (2 pair; 1 being a thin liner type)

1PM Daily  |  For Intermediate-Expert Skiers & Snowboarders

Get a real taste of touring with an AMGA certified guide right off the backside of Mammoth Mountain. Beginning at the summit gondola station and ending back at Main Lodge, this picturesque 3-hour tour is ideal for those who have completed an introductory Backcoutry Touring Course and want to take the next step, or already have backcountry skiing experience and are interested in exploring Mammoth Mountain's extaordinary backcountry with the added safety and expertise of a guide.

Location

Important Details

  • All students must complete the 3-hour Intro to Backcountry Touring clinic above prior to taking this sidecountry tour or have previously taken the equivalent introductory course covering avalanche equipment use and touring/skinning techniqu. Intro clinic and a Backcountry Tour can be done in the same day.
  • All trips require a minimum of two guests to proceed
  • 24-hour advanced booking is required
  • All tours are subject to cancellation or alteration in the event of severe weather or unfavorable avalanche conditions

A small group with an instructor is an ideal way to learn the basic techniques you'll need to shred the halfpipe, jumps and jibs found in the famous Unbound Terrain Parks. Our certified ski and snowboard instructors help you master the tricks you're interested in and progress through the different parks at your own pace.

Spend most of the day skiing Mammoth's vast, advanced snowy playground of steeps, bumps and powder. Our top instructors are ready to show you the best lines on the mountain and some secret stashes.

3-Day Session for Intermediate–Expert Levels

This is Mammoth's premier ski clinic for women, taught by women. Our top female instructors are eager to take you all over Mammoth Mountain's exciting terrain. Take on new challenges while working on your personalized goals. This is a great way to meet other female skiers and have some girl time on the mountain.

2-Day Session for Intermediate–Expert Levels

Whether you have always wanted to ski moguls like a pro or just want to learn how to handle bumps when you encounter them, this camp is for you. Two days of skiing – concentrating on moguls – will teach you specific bump techniques and help take your overall skiing to the next level.

SEASON-LONG PROGRAMS

Mountain Rangers Program

Mountain Rangers Program

Ages 4–10  |  12-Week Series for All Ability Levels 

Taught by our Ski & Snowboard School pros, this season-long lesson program puts the "fun" back into "fundamentals". Running from early December until late March, Mountain Rangers helps kids build strong mountain friendships while developing all-mountain skiing and riding skills.

All snowboarder lessons and all first-timer ski and snowboard lessons are ONLY offered during the 9AM session.

 

Program Details

Participants should already be able to independently ski or ride on chair 11: able to control speed and stop on their own with or without an edgie-wedgie (for skiers) and heal-side floating leaf (for snowboarders). If your child is not skiing/riding independently yet, please contact us about developing a plan to get them ready before for the start of the program. 

Each week students will be placed in groups according to age and ability which will evolve as they develop new skills throughout the season.

Performance Development Series

Performance Development Series

10-Week Series for Intermediate–Advanced Levels

Receive 10 weeks of lessons for one incredibly low price. Take advantage of intermediate and advance-level ski or snowboard group lessons and take your skills to a new level. Each week you'll work with Mammoth's top pros in a small group that is focused on the same skills and terrain.


Meet other skiers and riders of your level as you explore the mountain in search of the best terrain and snow with a top pro as your guide. You can also gather your own friends to form a group and have your own personal instructor for the whole season.
