A Vertical Race

Lung–burning fun for all at the Ski Mountaineering Challenge. Starting from Main Lodge, participants will skin their way through 5 ascents on Mammoth Mountain to complete this battle against themselves and the terrain. Ski mountaineering (SkiMo), a high-altitude up and down challenge imported from Europe, is rapidly becoming one of the hottest new winter sports in North America. Mammoth's Ski Mountaineering Challenge is completely in-bounds, offering a safer and more convenient route than in the backcountry, opening this new opportunity to competitors of all skill levels.

Yes, however participants are required to adhere to the designated mode of travel; for example booting where skinning is designated would not be allowed. Splitboarders are welcome to ski down with their board split in ski-mode if equipped with heel locking.

Are snowshoes or Nordic skis permitted?
No

Are crampons allowed?

Steps will be kicked for the boot pack sections, and crampons will not be necessary. However, competitors are welcome to use crampons at their own discretion.

Does the course have aid stations?

There will be two aid stations on the recreational course only. The first at the bottom of transition #2 (The Outpost area) and the second at the top of transition #5 (Scotty’s). Both aid stations will offer Clif products and water.
