There's a lot of amazing terrain out there waiting to be discovered, but you can find yourself in a life-threatening situation if you don't know how to explore safely. Through the expertise of our instructors and guides, we aim to be the best backcountry ski school in the nation by empowering you with safety protocols, educational opportunities, real mountain practice and a fun learning environment.

Intro to Backcountry Touring

For Intermediate–Expert Skiers/Snowboarders

Learn the basics of backcountry touring from our PSIA-certified instructors and AMGA-certified guides. These 3-hour clinics are limited to 6 students and cover touring and safety equipment, skinning, kick turns, downhill transitions, skating, and downhill ski practice, all with instructor demos, evaluation and feedback. It's the safest and easiest way to give touring a try, right here on Mammoth Mountain.

Classes meet on snow at between Main Lodge and the Panorama Gondola building.

AT Rentals & Equipment

For a successful backcountry experience, proper AT equipment or a splitboard is required to participate in both the clinic and tour. If you need to rent AT skis, there is a limited supply available from the Main Lodge Rental Shop (call 800.MAMMOTH to reserve), or participants can save 20% on rentals from Mammoth Mountaineering Supply in town (call 888.395.3951 to reserve).
