Mammoth Mountain Alpine Teams

The Mammoth Mountain Alpine Team is a program dedicated to the development of our athletes in all areas of their lives. Our Alpine Team produces world-class athletes through the use of cutting-edge facilities, a highly qualified coaching staff, and the elite terrain that Mammoth Mountain is known for.

Our staff maintains contacts that have the ability to move athletes onto U.S. Teams. If an athlete has the talent and motivation to excel in their sport, National Team Selection can be a reality.

This is not our only goal, what is really important to us is developing our athletes into good people. We teach and promote life skills that complement the work we do on the hill. Academics, responsibility, self-confidence, athletics and a strong work ethic are all integral parts of the MMSST experience.

Mighty Mites (6–8 yrs)

Mighty Mites (6–8 yrs)

The Mighty Mite Team is our entry level program for young skiers. Mighty Mites focus on basic skiing skills and acquiring mileage on skis. An important part of this program is learning how to handle the mountain environment. The coaches teach the skiers to stand on their skis properly, when and how to transfer weight from ski to ski and develop strong parallel turns. It is a fun, playful environment for the kids to ski, learn and interact with other kids their age.

Abilities

This is not a "learn-to-ski" program. Athletes must be able to comfortably ride the Thunderbound Express chairlift by themselves, as well as ski the runs serviced by this lift. This includes making linked turns consistently in both directions and the ability to stop safely. New athletes are required to schedule an assessment prior to the start of the program for group placement and skill assessment.

Schedule

The Mighty Mite Team starts in December, with weekend training and locker privileges. This season, the program will run from 9–11:30AM and 12:30–3PM on Saturdays and Sundays. If you are new to the program, please make sure you organize a skill assessment. Mighty Mites will have one afternoon session during the week from 2–4PM: Tuesday for 1st and 2nd graders, and Wednesday for 3rd graders. Mid-week skiing starts in January. Mighty Mites are not supervised during lunch – it is the parents responsibility to organize, supervise, and provide lunch for their athlete.

U14 (12–13 yrs)

U14 (12–13 yrs)

The U14 Team serves a wide range of skiing abilities. It is a combined intermediate/advanced racing program for skiers who have limited racing experience, but also provides more focused race training for the athletes who have several years of racing behind them. This group strives to be more efficient with movements to achieve the desired turn that matches the race course. Techniques and tactics play an important role. For the serious U14 members, we offer a full-time program that provides training 5 days a week. U14 athletes train in slalom, giant slalom and super giant slalom.

Abilities

Skiers need to be able to ski parallel over the lower 2/3s of the mountain and should be comfortable skiing the main runs off the top. Athletic skiers who are not comfortable on the top may be mixed with the U12 Team until they gain confidence skiing that part of the mountain. The stronger and more mature U14 members will ski and train with the U16 Team occasionally.

Schedule

The U14 Team skis from 9AM–3PM on weekends and holidays, commencing in November. Midweek training will be from 2–4PM on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting in December. The season finishes mid-April. U19/U21 (16–20 yrs)

U19/U21 (16–20 yrs)

The U19-21 program is geared toward the athlete who is serious about their ski racing. Training sessions require focus and motivation to refine skills and create positive changes in technique and tactics. This program is designed for athletes seeking National Team nomination, NCAA competition, higher education and a strong desire to improve every day.

Program

The Team trains in all four disciplines, with early morning speed options and tech training on our 'water prepared' piste throughout the winter season. The conditioning program is fully integrated into our programming with dryland running the entire off-season, and a focus on recovery, mobility, and strength maintenance through the competition season. The training sessions are largely centered on skills to improve all aspects of skiing and gate work for practice in specific events. On-hill and slopeside video analysis, fitness facilities, and academic work stations make this an all-inclusive athletic and academic program to maximize skier's potential.

Schedule

Dryland conditioning is year-round. We run spring and summer camps here at Mammoth, Mt. Hood, and in the Southern Hemisphere. On-snow training in Mammoth starts in November and finishes with our last race at the end of April. Weekly training includes 8:30AM–12:30PM weekday mornings with school in the afternoon at our Independent Learning Center within the public high school. We train all day each weekend and through the holidays. Post graduates are taught to customize their programming to suit their needs. Camps are offered for all athletes during the months of May, June, and into July and August.
