About Shakespeare in The Woods

Performing Shakespearean plays alfresco is a world-wide summer ritual and a natural fit for the stunning outdoor beauty of Mammoth Lakes.  This SCT tradition dates back to 2001, when the young company performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Hayden Cabin. In the ensuing years, many of the Bard’s most notable comedies have been produced, including Much Ado About Nothing, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, not to mention the cheeky send-off, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged.  SCT has also taken on some of his more serous works like The Tempest and this summer Susan Dalian will direct The Merchant of Venice set in the Western Frontier.

Nothing beats an alpine summer twilight with the vanilla scent of Jeffrey Pines wafting through the air and the Milky Way revealing itself overhead. For the past six years, ever since Shakespeare in The Woods was created under the guidance of Allison McDonell Page, local and visiting audiences have brought their evening picnics to Sam’s Woods Site for an evening of outdoor family fun. These productions have a tremendous following, and are a chance for SCT to give back to the community – since only a $10 donation is requested. SCT keeps the audiences coming back by dazzling them with unique takes on old classics: Twelfth Night set in the wild west; The Two Gentleman of Verona set in the roaring 20’s; and A Mammoth Midsummer Night’s Dream set right here in Mammoth Lakes. With a mix of seasoned actors and Shakespearean newbies, SCT’s summer shows never fail to delight.
