Although the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is closed for the season, there are still plenty of activities to keep you busy at Mammoth.  Come enjoy a round of golf at Sierra Star, California's highest 18-hole golf course.  Sierra Star is open seven days a week and tee times are available by calling 760.924.GOLF.

 

Fly Fishing guides and equipment are available at McCoy Sports in the Village until October 18th.  Let one of our experienced guides give you a lesson on proper technique or show you where all the current "hot spots" are.

Join the fun and activities for Halloween at Canyon Lodge from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The Tourism & Recreation Department will be providing fun games and activities for kids to take part in, there will be a raffle and lots of fun to be had. Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra will be selling food, drinks and cotton candy. Volunteers needed.

Fishing Report Details

Hot Creek  

Last Updated Sep 11, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: No big Change other than the winds have been calm the last few days, Hot Creek remains Weedy with low water conditions but the action continues to produce some great fish. plenty of caddis action mornings and evenings. Test your casting skills target fishing an short drifts. Many trout playing hide and seek with lots of places for trout to rest under the weed beds and long the sides. Still a strong hatch of Caddis. The wind has been out of the south in the mid morning switching to south west in the afternoon. Insects moving into a summer pattern morning and evening being ths most active, Caddis, Trico's action morning Spinners and Female and evening Male duns! Baetis action midday. Fish are starting to become Very selective and a good drift is always productive.

Nymphing Patterns: Surface emergers, olive/brown scuds, Caddis emerger patterns. San Juan Worms, Pt's. Brassie's Beadhead stonefly patterns are all Standard pattern to start with. 18-22s

Dry Fly Patterns: Bwo's,Schroeder's parachute caddis, Brook's Hot Creek caddis, Headlight Caddis, Low profile caddis, Brooks Baetis sprouts, size 18-22s Headlight yellow Sallies 16s PMDs size 16s, Female compara duns tricos size 18-22s

Attractor Patterns: Small stimulators orange/yellow 18's, Ants and Hoppers, Beetles. 14-18s

Upper Owens  

Last Updated Sep 11, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: Plenty of action not as many people mostly Stockers and smaller wild Browns! Remember No Bait fishing above the Benton Crossing Bridge and below the monument to the lake. If you witness poaching call on your cell phone CADFG 760 872-1172 Etiquette is a must as there is plenty of area to fish here, Water levels have come up in the last week as LADWP has started exporting water from Grant lake this has dropped water temp through out the river and improved conditions some lake fish starting to move up. plenty of Hoppers around, Caddis and Tricos morning and evenings lots of smaller wild fish taking the dry flies, Both the upper and lower sections are holding plenty of planters as DFG has be planting on a regular schedule. A few Mosquitoes still out might still have the repellent handy!! The area from the Benton bridge up to the power lines has been producing along with the the lower end down stream of the bridge most pools and deeper runs holding lots of fish.

Nymphing Patterns: Beadhead Prince Nymphs, Bead Pheasent Tails, Hares Ears, San Juan worms, Are all good flies to start with.

Dry Fly Patterns: Adams, Orange Stimulators, Bwos, Baetis, caddis patterns in size 16-20s

Streamer: Black or Olive Wolly Buggers, Muddler Minnows you will need some weight to get them down no dip and strip necessary. Size 8.

Crowley Tributaries  

Last Updated Sep 11, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: a few larger fish inthe deeper pools Very Spooky as the Water is very low and super clear only 7cfs at the Highway on McGee Creek. . temp starting to drop as the high country begins to cool during the night time. Overall conditions have improved due to lower water temps. daily hatches ocurring. Stoneflies Caddis, Mayflies, Midges ,Hoppers fish will be in the pools or just off the ledges. Approach with some stealth.

Nymphing Patterns: Hares ears, Soft Hackles, PT's, Prince Nymphs. Micro Mayflies lighten Bugs and Midges.

Dry Fly Patterns: Caddis and Mayflies patterns will take fish midday. Try a orange or yellow stimulator! size 16-18. Hoppers 14s

Streamer: smaller streamers 10-12s.

Lower Owens  

Last Updated Sep 5, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: The flows have come up a little and are holding right at 350cfs. If you plan to fish, weather still warm in the Bishop area, look for the seams, eddies, in the slower runs to hold the fish. Mostly Trico,Baetis. Nothing great yet fishing wise. Water temp was 66 at 8:00am the other day! Trico Hatch was miniumal in the Wild Trout section below campground in the section we fished more Baetis near mid-morning. if the water gets near the 200cfs we should see much better results.

Nymphing Patterns: Try nymphing in the mornings with WD-40s and Brassies, then go to Bead Head Pheasant Tails, Olive Surface Emergers, Barr's wet emergers or RS Emergers. Sizes 18-20s 18-22s.

Dry Fly Patterns: Small midge patterns, bwos Beatis, Trico and Caddis pattern 18-20s.

Attractor Patterns: Small Stimulator, Trudes, Wulffs.

East Walker  

Last Updated Sep 5, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: Might come into play here soon as night time temps in the Bridgeport area helping to cool the lake down. Low water quality still a problem as the lake is very low. Early Morning will be your best bet if you most fish up there. Remember high water temps will strain the fish and may harm them even kill them. If water temps are in the 70s it would be best to move on to another fishery.

Nymphing Patterns: Pheasant Tails, Olive Surface Emergers, Brassies, Red Copper Johns, Bead Head Black and Olive WD-40s, Disco Midges, Barr's Wet Emergers, Zebra Midges, Olive & Natural Birds Nests, Prince Nymphs, and Green Nori's Caddis. San Juan Worm (red) size 14-16.

Dry Fly Patterns: BWO, PMDs, Hemingway Caddis, EC Caddis, Schroeder's Para Caddis and Adams in sizes 16-18, Orange and Yellow stimulators sizes 14-16.

Streamer: Try Muddler Minnows, Wool Head Sculpins, Bunny Leech's, Woolly Buggers and Dave's Chubs. Use size 6s and see what happens.

Crowley Lake  

Last Updated Sep 11, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: Regulations have moved to the Trophy Trout Season as of August 1st. Meaning No Bait and Only Artificial flies or lures maybe used! Barbs most be pinched and only 2 trout over 18" maybe kept.

The Draw down on Crowley continues! Some shallow Dangerous areas well off the West shoreline on your way out to McGee Bay use Caution might be costly. BIG NEWS CADFG Has plant some 150,000 Cole Strain Rainbows on Sept 9th. This will for sure change the dynamic on the lake as the little willy's will eat every thing in sight. Next plant will be the Kamaloops they need a little more time to grow in the Hatchery be for they will plant them. Action Continues to be in the McGee Bay area and North Arm Green Bank area Nothing great but action here and there .Perch and Midges are the main table fair. Stripping actions is producing good action for those willing to switch lines and Tactics. Water temps have dropped on the Upper Owens the North Arm up near Green Banks should wake up in the next few days. This might be the last weekend before the Wilber size trout Take Over the lake!!!!

*** Note T-storms are posible anytime during the summer months use caution as lightening and strong winds can produce dangerous conditions on the lake.

*****Use common sense when driving on the backside of the lake, as there are areas where the ground is very soft, and a tow truck will be costly.

Nymphing Patterns: Gray Midges with Black or red and wire have been the best, size 16-18s. Callibaetis Nymphs size 16. Brown and Olive leeches getting some good strikes!!

Dry Fly Patterns: Adams

Streamer: Olive leeches and Wolly Buggers, Damsel fly Nymphs. Perch fry Patterns Try a dropper fly above your streamer with intermediate to fast sinking line. Teeny 130 gain is a good line or a 20 sink tip.

Mammoth Lakes Basin  

Last Updated Sep 11, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: Water Temp falling should increase action in the coming weeks. A nice weekend is in forecast. Lots of fish remain as most angler's were blown off the lakes on Saturday,Sunday of Labor day weekend. Great report of Alper's and DFG fish being caught at Lake Mary, George, Mamie and Twin with the exception of Horseshoe as it is not stocked. only light breezes predicted this weekend.

Use streamer patterns in the Olives, Black, Brown. Olive & Browns tend to be the best producer. A local favorite is the Doc's Twin Lake Special. A dropper fly behind the streamer can work well. Beadhead Prince or PT and Hares Ear all can help your odds.

Nymphing Patterns: PTs Nymphs, Beadhead Hares Ears, Zebra Midges, sizes 16-20s

Dry Fly Patterns: Adult midges in the evenings when it glasses off or if it glasses off. size 16-20 patterns

Streamer: Your favorite Black or olive Wolly Buggers. Size 10-12s

San Joaquin  

Last Updated Sep 5, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: Water levels below normal in the upper reaches for this time of year. Better water conditions in the lower reaches below Postpile area to the lower Rainbow Falls area. Less people in the campgrounds stocker still present in the Upper Soda Springs area, Most of the insect hatching is occurring in the later afternoons and evenings. Caddis and Mayflies along with some Stone flies. The San Joaquin is the Jewel of the Sierras as you are driving into the Backcountry in a true alpine setting! The wild fish are on the smaller size but the colors are great and there willing to rise to a dry fly!!

Nymphing Patterns: Small BH PTS, Prince, Micro Stonefly, Zebra midges

Dry Fly Patterns: Adams, Humpies, lightCahills Stimulator in Orange & Yellows, Size 14-20s

Attractor Patterns: Royal Coachman, Royal Wluff's, Trudes in sizes 16-20s

Bridgeport Reservoir  

Last Updated Sep 5, 2008 by Harry Blackburn: The cool down we had last week has helped water temp drop and should improve overall conditions. The best area to fish is on the south end near the East Walker Channel in 12 ft. Large fish slurping on the surface taking Blood Midges and Mayflies perch fry and Damsel nymphs on the calm mornings. The lake is low just over half full. Fish are spread throughout the area.

Boat ramps might be unuseable do to low water conditions check before planning a outing the area near the Dam might be the only launch area.

Nymphing Patterns: Red, Brown, Black/copper wire, midge patterns are working the best. around the 10-14 ft depth. Pts, Hares ears, Damsel fly patterns

Dry Fly Patterns: Adult Midge Some Large(red) ones and Calibaetis Patterns to rising fish.

Attractor Patterns:

Streamer: Large brown or Black leech patterns or hornbergs with a Hares Ear dropper. Damsels patterns,
