About the programs:
Enjoy the benefits of consistent, season long coaching sessions this winter. A staff of qualified instructors are back to share their technical expertise in three special Masters Programs. Enrollment in the 2011-2012 season Master Programs is open to all skiers, from beginners to experienced ski racers. Each program is designed to raise levels of skiing skills and enjoyment in both the classic (striding) and skating techniques. Courses are open to all participants 18 years and older. Video analysis is included in all programs. A valid Trail Pass is needed to participate in the Masters Classes.
Beginning Masters: Learn about Winter Fitness!
This program is for those who would like to start a long-term commitment to cross
country skiing this winter. It’s designed for skiers with limited cross country experience. Skill development will progress from basic balance and gliding drills to specific techniques used in uphill, flat and downhill terrain. Conditioning, choosing the right ski equipment and waxing will be addressed in this class. The Beginning Masters program will meet every Tuesday or Saturday at 9:00 am (ready to ski) starting Tuesday, November 29th or Saturday, December 3rd 2011.
Intermediate Masters: Get up those Hills!
Improve your skiing efficiency and have more fun this winter on the trails by joining this Masters program for intermediate level skiers. Previous skiing experience is required for this course (participants must have a functional diagonal stride and V-1 skate and be able to control speed on downhills). Emphasis in this program will be on learning the appropriate techniques for terrain and snow speed. Conditioning and waxing will be an important part of the curriculum. Interested in ski racing? This is an opportunity to gain the skill and confidence to tie on a number and go for it in some of the local races. The Intermediate Masters program will meet every Tuesday or Saturday at 9:00 am (ready to ski) starting Tuesday, November 29th 2011 or Saturday, December 3rd 2011.
Advanced Masters: Get Honed!
This is the program for serious recreational racers to work on fine-tuning technique for increased efficiency and speed. Join other dedicated skiers for intensive weekly two-hour sessions to get race-ready or just look good out on the tracks. Previous experience in the Master program or “pretty good” technique in both skating and classic skiing on all terrain is required for participation at this level. Technique work and conditioning are the focus of this program. Meetings will be on Tuesdays starting November 29th , 2011, Wednesdays starting November 30th , 2011 or Saturdays starting December 3rd 2011 starting at 9:00 am.
Conditioning Class: Get in the Best Shape of your Life!
This class is being offered to help structure the serious skier’s training. Learn about systematic cross country ski training through interval training, speed work, specific strength and pace workouts. Work with one of our coaches to design an individualized training plan and enjoy the journey to peak fitness. This program is for any level skier who wants to work hard. Workouts will be tailored to suit a variety of fitness levels. This class is offered on Thursdays at 8:30 am starting December 1st , 2011.
NEW CLASS - Off-Trail Crusing - An Intro to Lightweight XC Ski Touring
This program will enhance your off trail uphill and downhill skiing skills and increase your confidence in variable snow conditions. Skill development will progress from flat, off-track skiing and terrain to skiing hills, up and down, in various snow conditions, learning various types of techniques and turns. Improve your overall XC skiing, explore new terrain and get some great exercise and enjoyment, all while learning new skills. This class is not intended for beginner XC skiers. Students must be able to snowplow and stop confidently and have several years experience in XC skiing. Ideal gear setup includes waxless, metal edged XC ski with heavy step in binding (such as NNN-BC or SNS-BC bindings), "BC" style boots with plastic cuff support and adjustable poles with powder basket. This class is offered Wednesdays starting November 30th, 2011.
All Masters Programs
- Cross country skiing is fun in all kinds of weather, but in the case of severe weather, please call the ski center at 934- 2442 Ext. 8, 30 minutes before starting time if there is a question of cancellation.
- Equipment rentals for both skating and striding are available at the Tamarack Ski Center. Rental cost per Masters session: $ 10.00.
- Masters participants receive a 15% discount at Tamarack’s retail shop.

Gliders Program Details
WHO: Children ages 6-10 years old with Special Class for Kindergarten Kids age 5 on Fridays
WHAT: Skills, activities and games on snow to teach children to ski and enjoy the winter environment.
WHEN: Friday Afternoons from 3 to 4pm (Meeting dates: January 6, 13, 20, 27; February 3, 10 23; March 2, 9) OR Sunday Afternoons from 2 to 3pm (Meeting dates: January 8, 15, 22, 29; February 6, 12, 26; March 4, 11). Kindergarten Kids meet Friday Afternoons from 2 to 3pm (Meeting dates: January 6, 13, 20, 27; February 3, 10 23; March 2, 9)
WHERE: Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center, Mammoth Lakes.
COST: $90 includes rentals, coaching and trail passes for 9 sessions
Gliders Program Information
The Tamarack Gliders Program was conceived by Olympian Nancy Fiddler as a way to encourage children to enjoy the sport of cross country skiing. Through games and fun activities, children learn skiing skills and explore trails in the winter wonderland of the Lakes Basin. Treasure hunts, obstacle courses, games of tag and tree skiing are the means by which Tamarack's qualified staff of instructors coach the Gliders. This year we will offer a special class for Kinder Garden Kids Age 5 on Friday afternoon from 2:00 – 3:00. The group will be split by age and ability for all sessions. Parents are encouraged to come out and ski with the kids.
Cross Country skiing is fun in all kinds of weather, but in case of a severe storm, a session may be cancelled. Please call the ski center at 934-2442 if there is a question regarding weather.
What to Wear
The clothing worn for cross country skiing is slightly different than for alpine skiing. Cross country skiing in an aerobic sport and it is possible to become quite warm while exerting on the snow. Multiple layers of clothing are preferable to a single heavy snowsuit. Recommended clothing includes fleece jackets and vests, nylon windbreakers and pants, and "wicking" type long underwear. Hats, mittens or warm gloves and sunglasses or goggles are a must. And don’t forget the sunscreen.

Avalanche Program Details
WHO: Middle School aged kids (6th thru 8th grades)
WHAT: Technique, conditioning and fun activities to improve cross country skiing skills. This program is a good bridge from Gliders to High School skiing.
WHEN: Sunday Afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30pm. Meeting dates: December 4, 11, 18; January 8, 15, 22, 29; February 6, 12, 26; March 4, 11.
WHERE: Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center, Mammoth Lakes.
COST: $170 includes coaching, rental and trail pass for the class.
A minimum of 6 sign-ups needed to make the program go
Avalanche Program Information
The Avalanche program is for kids involved in cross country skiing after they outgrow the Tamarack Gliders program. Cross country skiing is a great activity for middle school aged kids, whether they are interested in learning to compete or just in having a good time outdoors with their fiends. Qualified staff at Tamarack Cross Country will coach this program, emphasizing skill development in both the classic and the skate techniques. Participants will work up to skiing longer and longer distances.
There are competition opportunities for Avalanche participants through Far West and the CNISSF school league. A schedule of events will be produced at the beginning of the season and competing is not mandatory.

Cross Country skiing is an aerobic sport and it is possible to become quite warm while exerting on snow.
