Environmental Commitment
We are on the edge of a new
decade.
We have more knowledge on environmental impacts than ever before.
We are actualizing our environmental consciousness here at Mammoth and we want everyone to "think white and act green"!
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area LLC. (MMSA) has always accepted its responsibility to manage the environmental impacts of its 1.5 million visitors a year, and we've done it because it is the right thing to do. But we now recognize that that just isn't enough. We need to share what we are doing, use our exposure to leverage change, and not only be a leader in the Southern California region but in the entire ski resort industry.
MMSA owns and operates Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain, Tamarack Lodge and Resort, Mammoth Snowmobile Adventures, Sierra Star Golf Course, Wilderness Outfitters Fishing Guides, Mammoth Resort Real Estate, 10 restaurants, 5 base lodges, 7 retail stores, 54 snowcats, 87 vehicles, 37 lifts and manages over 600 hotel rooms all of which is on or surrounded by California's Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and the Inyo National Forest. Bad news: That's a lot of impact!
But there is good news!
It goes without saying, but being in California, MMSA operates under the strictest environmental laws in the world! MMSA's CEO Rusty Gregory sits on the Governors California Travel and Recreation Commission and pushes the company to not only meet but exceed all State environmental codes and regulations.
MMSA completed its first LEED certified building in 2008, a Platinum level guest cabin at Tamarack. One of only a couple in the entire State! Since then, we have completed 4 of 24 ski-in ski-out luxury condos at Altis which are pending certification of Gold and we are designing our new base lodge at Eagle to be LEED certified as well.
In 2010, Sierra Star golf course will begin using recycled water for irrigation. The first in the Eastern Sierra to do so. The course will now save enough potable water to meet the need of 800 average American households.
MMSA has reduced its energy usage by 23% through building, lighting and air system modifications since setting a baseline of 118,285 million BTU's in 2000. This ain't green washin' sister, this is the real thing!
MMSA is in the process of registering its carbon footprint with the California Action Climate Registry, which is expected to be certified by and independent third party consultant later this year.
